Anniversary Rain

Draft in the author’s style. This poem was written for Poet of Blossom to sit beside the author’s own readings, and is waiting for the author’s review. The commentary is a working draft too.

It rained upon our wedding day and rains upon this one,
As if the sky remembered and was glad that we had won.

We stand beneath the awning where the first vows made their way,
And the water drums applause upon the pavement and the bay.

You hold your palm out to the drops and laugh as you did then,
And I see the one I married in the face I know again.

We have weathered bills and sleepless nights and mountains hard to climb,
And every storm has shown us that our hearts are keeping time.

So let it pour, my darling, let it wash the years with grace,
For I would choose this same wet day and this same warm embrace.

Commentary

Rain fell on this couple’s wedding day, and it falls again on their anniversary. The poem turns bad weather into a sign of blessing and a mirror of a shared history.

“It rained upon our wedding day and rains upon this one,” as if the sky “remembered.” The couple stands “beneath the awning where the first vows made their way,” while “the water drums applause upon the pavement.” The beloved holds out a palm “and laugh as you did then,” and the speaker sees “the one I married in the face I know again.”

Years of “bills and sleepless nights and mountains hard to climb” have passed, and “every storm has shown us that our hearts are keeping time.” The speaker ends with a toast to the rain: “let it pour, my darling,” for the speaker would “choose this same wet day and this same warm embrace.”
